Jamf Pro - Apple Mac Management Tool

Overview

Jamf Pro is a comprehensive management system for Apple macOS and iOS devices. With Jamf, Temple University ITS and dedicated support groups can proactively manage the entire lifecycle of Apple devices. This includes deploying and maintaining software, responding to security threats, distributing settings, and analyzing inventory data.

Benefits

Jamf Pro provides a number of benefits including the following:

  • Reliability: Your device will receive centrally managed and tested software updates that maximize the compatibility with Temple’s line of business software and solutions.
  • Flexibility: You can choose when and where to install new software.
  • Security: Temple University manages the security compliance of your machine, so you don't have to. You can rest assured that software patches, antivirus protection, and firewalls are well maintained. In addition, data on lost devices can be securely erased remotely.

Information Collected by Jamf Pro

The implementation of Jamf Pro at Temple University has been customized to collect only the data needed to support macOS and iOS devices and for asset tracking. This information includes:

  • Hardware Specifications
  • Installed Applications
  • Total Disk Space Usage
  • Services Running
  • Available Software Updates
  • Local User Accounts and Login/Logout Timestamps
  • Security Status (Firewall, SSH, etc)
  • Primary User Information
  • Campus Building Location

No personal information is collected, such as contents or names of personal files (documents, photos, music, email, etc.) or any browsing history.

The collection and the use of the above-listed data are subject to change based on future University initiatives.

Enrollment of the Devices in Jamf Pro

All new macOS computers purchased through the Temple-approved purchasing channels and are managed by Temple ITS are enrolled in Jamf Pro at the time of deployment. If your macOS computer is not currently enrolled in Jamf Pro, and you would like to have your computer enrolled in Jamf Pro, please contact the Help Desk at 215-204-8000 or submit a TUHelp request at tuhelp.temple.edu .

Please refer to your dedicated IT support group for additional information, as they may have different enrollment requirements.

How do I know if my Mac is Enrolled?

You will know that your Mac is enrolled in Jamf Pro if the Self Service app icon appears in the list of applications on your macOS computer.

​​​​​​​The Jamf Pro Self Service app allows ITS to offer you software, macOS updates, and other items, in a controlled environment for you to complete on your own time. It appears similar to the Apple App Store and is installed in the Applications folder on your Mac.

Managed Software Updates

Beginning in Spring 2025 Information Technology Services (ITS) will implement managed software updates for Jamf Pro managed computers. As part of this process, you will see a pop-up notice, similar to the following, when a macOS update is available:

Upon receiving this notice, you will have three days to schedule the update and restart your computer. Otherwise, your computer will be updated and restarted automatically during business hours.

Notes

  • This process will include new macOS releases as well as smaller updates.
  • Your computer will receive these updates regardless of whether you are working from on-campus or off-campus.

Recommendations

  • Install updates and restart your computer as soon as possible. Some updates can take a while to install, so plan accordingly to minimize disruption of your workday.
  • Keep your computer regularly charged so updates can be installed.
  • Save your work and close applications at the end of each workday. This will ensure you will not lose any data when your computer is restarted.
