An SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificate is the digital equivalent of an identification card that is used with a public key encryption system to provide security on the Internet. SSL certificates, which are also referred to as digital IDs, public key certificates, or identity certificates, are issued by a trusted third-party certification authority, such as GlobalSign or VeriSign.
Temple University schools, colleges, and administrative departments can purchase SSL certificates through Information Technology Services at a discounted price that is generally unavailable to the public. Digital certificates are available until the expiration date.
The customer submits a certificate request to GlobalSign, and, upon approval from Information Technology Services, GlobalSign sends the certificate to the customer. The customer is responsible for:
After a customer submits a request for an SSL certificate, Information Technology Services will process the request on the next business day (Monday through Friday). Then, GlobalSign will send the certificate to the customer.

Note: When submitting a request for an SSL certificate, the customer must include a FOAPAL.

Select a Validity Period for the certificate. This can be from one to five years. Note: These instructions cover only NEW certificate requests that do not require Subject Alternative Names (SANs).
