Server Lifecycle Management

What is this Service? 

Server Lifecycle Management within Temple ITS ensures that university servers—from provisioning through decommissioning—are consistently and securely managed. This includes:

  • Planning & Provisioning: Servers are requested, approved, and configured securely for various campus systems.
  • Maintenance & Monitoring: Ongoing patching, updates, performance tuning, and uptime monitoring.
  • Decommissioning & Refresh: End-of-life servers are properly retired, data securely migrated or disposed, before replacement or shutdown.

Who is Eligible to use it?

ITS Infrastructure & Systems teams lead SLM activities and Authorized units (e.g., academic departments, research hubs, administrative offices) can request new or updated servers via ITS request channels.

Cost and Limitations

  • Servers must comply with Temple’s security standards (e.g., OS-hardening, encryption, backup policies).
  • University-owned servers only—no BYOD or personal hardware.
  • Standard lifecycle refresh intervals (typically 3–5 years), depending on usage and risk level.
  • Changes must follow ITS change management processes outlined in university IT policy.
