TECH Center Requirements and Policies

Overview

To use the TECH Center:

  • Upon entering, students and employees must tap or swipe their Temple ID cards
  • Use your AccessNet username and password to log in to lab workstations and log off upon completion of work.
  • You must save your files on cloud storage, such as OneDrive, Google Drive, or an external flash/hard drive; items saved on the desktop and document folders will be deleted daily.

If you have questions, visit the consultant desk on the 2nd floor.

Tip: When working late, consider using the Flight evening shuttle services.

The following populations are eligible to use the TECH Center:

  • Current students (for-credit only), faculty, staff of Temple University
  • Recent Temple graduates (up to one full year following graduation)
  • First-year graduates must sign in with their AccessNet ID and password at the "Authentication Station."
  • Students are not permitted to sign-in guests at this time.

Additional policies:

  • General use of the TECH Center is free to eligible users.
  • All workstations, including specialty labs, are available on a first-come, first-served basis
  • Computers are for academic, non-profit use only; commercial use of equipment is not permitted.
  • Use of the TECH Center is intended for individual work only.
  • Information Technology Services is not responsible for lost work or data, or for damage to any peripheral devices attached to TECH Center computers.
  • Individual labs (Specialty Labs, Quiet Lab, etc.) may have additional rules other than those listed here. These will be posted inside the appropriate room.
  • Photography/videography within the TECH Center is prohibited unless written permission is obtained in advance from TECH Center management. Students who wish to shoot photos or videos for a class assignment must request permission at least 48 hours in advance.
  • Distribution of literature, flyers, or posting of notices in the TECH Center is strictly prohibited. Solicitation of any kind is prohibited.
  • Setup of information tables, collection boxes, etc. in the TECH Center is prohibited. TECH Center resources (such as breakout rooms) may not be used for commercial activities.
  • Cell phone usage is permitted in lounge areas. If you need to make a call, please move to one of the lounge areas. Please keep your voice at a moderate volume and be considerate of those around you who may be studying. If you cannot keep your voice at a moderate level, you may be asked to end your call or leave the facility.
  • Students/staff with small children who are disruptive will be asked to the leave the facility.
  • Children are not permitted to use the computer equipment. With the exception of authorized tour groups, children are not permitted in the lab during peak usage periods.
  • Use of stairs other than the main entrance of the lab is for emergency exit only.
  • Food and drink are not permitted in any section of the TECH Center, including the computer areas, lounges, breakout rooms, media studio, and recording booths.
  • Information Technology Services reserves the right to remove users from the labs and/or prohibit future use of the labs if individuals abuse the rooms, disturb others in the lab, or violate policies.

By logging onto a TECH Center computer, you agree to abide by all Information Technology Services policies.

 

Breakout Rooms

  • Breakout rooms are available only to currently registered Temple University students.

  • Rooms may be reserved for single uses up to one week in advance. (No more than one advance reservation per person.)  Rooms are assigned based on availability. Information Technology Services cannot guarantee use of a specific room.

  • When not reserved in advance, breakout rooms are available for immediate use on a first come, first served basis.

  • If users are more than 15 minutes late for a reservation, the room may be given to someone else.

  • Breakout Rooms are intended primarily for academic use by students for course-related assignments and activities.

  • Student organizations may use the rooms for meetings based on availability.

  • Use of the rooms for commercial activities and solicitations is strictly prohibited.

  • Use by faculty or staff is permitted only when the use involves a student group (review sessions, meeting, etc.). Such uses are restricted to one-time only use. Regularly scheduled events (such as classes) are not permitted. (There is a separate breakout room available for faculty/staff through the Center for Achievement in Teaching (CAT) on the 1st floor.)

  • The rooms must be booked by one of the students who will be using the room. Faculty members, for example, may not book the rooms for their students unless they are going to be present in the room during the reservations.

  • Users of breakout rooms must be respectful of others working outside the rooms. Noise should be kept to a minimum; volume on equipment must be kept to a reasonable level.

  • Rooms must be kept neat and clean. Users should ensure that rooms are returned to original condition before leaving the room.   Whiteboards should be erased before leaving room.

  • Information Technology Services reserves the right to remove users from the breakout rooms and/or prohibit future use of breakout rooms if individuals abuse the rooms, disturb others in the lab, or violate policies.

  • Use for purely social purposes (watching movies, socializing, playing games, etc.) is prohibited.

  • Food and drinks are not permitted in the rooms.

Equipment Loans

  • Equipment loans are available only to currently registered Temple University students.

  • A borrowing agreement must be signed once each academic year.

  • Equipment can be signed out for four hours at a time. Depending on availability, students can renew the loaner equipment by returning to the consultant desk with their ID and the equipment and having their OWLcard re-swiped.

Multimedia Studio

  • The multimedia studio is available only to currently registered Temple University students, faculty and staff.
  • An orientation session is required prior to using the studio.

Recording Booths

The recording booths are available only to currently registered Temple University students, faculty, and staff.

Specialty Printing Room

  • Printing room resources are available only to currently registered Temple University students, faculty, and staff.
  • Paper substitutions are not permitted except with the inkjet printers. Only approved inkjet paper may be used. (Please bring the paper in the original wrapping/box for verification purposes.)

3D Printing

  • Print jobs left for more than 24 hours will be discarded.
  • Information Technology Services is not responsible for any objects printed on the 3D printer.
  • Printing of any object that Information Technology Services determines to be unlawful, threatening, abusive, physically harmful, obscene, and racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable is prohibited.
  • The use of the 3D printer is restricted to Temple University academic work only.
  • All 3D printing must be supervised by a trained TECH Center consultant.
  • Additional files cannot be added to a currently printing job.  All files must be submitted as a new request through Request Help on the TUhelp website. The request is then placed in a queue and completed on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • By submitting your 3D printing request, you agree to all notices and guidelines in this document.
