Overview

The TECH Center features the following resources:

a student computer center with approximately 500 fixed workstations and 50 wireless loaner laptops. There is also a Laptop Share kiosk, and many high-speed duplex and color specialty printers
13 breakout rooms and 2 MediaScape tables for collaboration and group study
specialized labs including specialty printing, video editing, recording booths, multimedia studio, graphic design, music composition, advanced technology lab, and "quiet" zones
social space for students with lounge areas and digital signage
Technology Support Center for students, faculty, and staff

Breakout Rooms

TECH Center breakout rooms offer students the privacy and resources needed to work collaboratively. These rooms are intended for academic functions such as group projects, practicing presentations and viewing course-oriented media.

Resources

There are 13 breakout rooms are located on the first and second floors of the TECH Center. They are equipped with a flat panel wall display, a whiteboard and a desk with a computer set up for group interaction. All breakout rooms are equipped with webcams and microphones.

Instructions

Students are limited to a maximum of 9 hours of reservations per week.
To reserve a room, go to groupstudy.temple.edu . You can also reserve a room by visiting the TECH Center Consultant's Desk or by calling 215-204-9898.

Equipment Loans

Laptops, iPads and additional equipment are available for a four-hour loan from the TECH Center Lab.

Instructions

To borrow a laptop or iPad, please go to the Consultant Desk on the 2nd floor of the TECH Center lab.
After signing the borrowing agreement, you must swipe your OWLcard to check-out and check-in devices.

Multimedia Studio

The multimedia studio (Room 215-J in the TECH Center) is equipped for video shoots, audio recording, still photography sessions and video-conference interviews.

Resources

The 12 x 18 ft. studio includes:

sound-reduction insulation, acoustic glass windows, and echo-reducing foam tiles on walls
four ceiling-mounted video lighting rigs with dimmer switches
backdrop frame with green screen and black, and white backdrops
a Sony HXR-NX5U NXCAM Professional HD Camcorder and tripod system
electronic adjustable-height workstation tables
a Macintosh with the following software:
- Adobe Creative Cloud
- Audacity audio editing software
- ProTools audio editing software
a MOTU HDX-SDI SDI, HDMI, Analog Video Interface for Mac
a Mackie 1402-VLZ3 14-channel Mixer
a Behringer TRUTH B2030A Active 2-Way Reference Studio Monitor

Instructions

An orientation session is required prior to using the studio. To request an orientation session and studio time complete one of the following submit a request by going to http://tuhelp.temple.edu.

Recording Booths

TECH Center recording booths offer students a private, acoustically treated environment to record podcasts, vocal narrations, voiceovers and other individual recording sessions. The recording booths vary in size and can accommodate 1-3 people, with one booth (Booth C) being wheelchair accessible.

Three recording booths are available. Equipment includes:

a prefabricated, acoustically treated environment
an iMac
a microphone
a mixer
professional-grade recording software

Specialty Labs

The TECH Center features six labs with space and/or specialized equipment and software.

Resources

Two video editing labs with video editing software (i.e.Adobe Premiere), dual displays, etc.
Audio editing lab with music composition software and audio editing software (i.e. Pro Tools).
Graphics lab with CAD software (i.e. Auto CAD, Rhino), engineering software (i.e. SolidWorks, Trane) and other specialty software.
Two quiet study labs with separates carrels for students working individually.

Specialty Printing Rooms

In addition to the print stations throughout the TECH Center, the Specialty Printing Room offers specialized printers.

The print operations room offers:

High-volume laser printers for print jobs over 25 pages
Color laser printers
Inkjet printers
Plotters
Coin-operated/Diamond Dollars copier

Instructions

To print:

Select appropriate printer from the print dialogue box.
Swipe ID at the appropriate printer release station.
Verify the price and page count. See Student Printing in Temple University Computer Labs for information regarding Payment for Color/Specialty Printing.
Select “Print” to complete print job.
Funds are deducted from Print Quota, if available, or Diamond Dollars for black and white laser, color laser, and inkjet printing. Diamond Dollars funds are deducted for the plotters.

This index includes the software available in the TECH Center. Each software package and its location is listed alphabetically.

Note: This software list is for general reference only and may be subject to change. New software is added periodically and unused software may be removed. Some software may be metered to limit the number of concurrent users.

3D Printing

3D printing is available in the TECH Center for academic use by Temple University students, faculty and staff.

The following open-source sites allow you to download free 3D models; some may be modifiable:

Instructions

Create the File

Files can be created in SolidWorks, Blender, AutoCad, or Rhino. Currently, the 3D printer recognizes .obj, .thing and the more common .stl file formats. All .stl files must be exportable as (closed) stl files! The 3D printer only recognizes model files in the .STL format that have no open edges and mesh contains no holes.
All files must be expressed in inches on a 1:1 scale.
Currently, models are limited to a working envelope of (9.7” L x 6.0” W x 6.1” H).

Schedule the Project

To schedule 3D printing, submit a request using Request Help at tuhelp.temple.edu.
Attach file to be printed to the request. The file should be complete, and in .STL, .thing, or .OBJ format. Requestor will receive a reply within one business day to schedule an appointment with a TECH Center consultant to review and print the model. Attend the scheduled appointment to find out the time and cost estimate to print the file. The final cost will be determined after the object has been printed and weighed and will include any support material printed by the printer that is needed to complete the object. Objects must be paid for using Diamond Dollars at time of pickup.

Printing Process

Go to TECH Center, 2nd Floor Consultant Desk at the scheduled time. Due to the nature of the 3D printing process, once it begins, it must be completed in its entirety. Projects may take several hours to several days to complete, depending on the models complexity. The requestor is expected to be present while the model is being printed.
Upon completion, pay for the print job using Diamond Dollars at the Consultant Desk.

Questions about creating the 3D files should be submitted through TUhelp. Consultants will be available to assist if a problem arises during the 3D printing process.
