Microsoft 365 - Getting Started

Overview

Microsoft 365 provides students, faculty and staff with access to the latest version of Word , Excel , PowerPoint , Outlook , OneDrive , and Teams . The software can be loaded on up to five PCs and Macs, and up to five compatible mobile devices.

Additional apps are available on the portal.office.com website when you sign in with your @temple.edu email address and select Work or School account

This offering is only available to currently enrolled students and current employees (faculty and staff) and is subject to Temple University's participation in this Microsoft program.

  • System Requirements: Office supports PCs running Windows 10 and above. Office for Mac is supported on the three most recent versions of macOS (Currently 10.13 High Sierra and later).

    To use Office on a Chromebook, download the Office mobile apps via the Google Play store. Windows or Mac desktop versions of Office cannot be installed on a Chromebook. Alternatively, Chromebook users also have the option of using the web versions of Office by logging in to portal.office.com with their AccessNet credentials.

  • OneDrive Cloud Storage
    1 TB
    of storage in the cloud to save your documents which you can then access online and on mobile applications. Learn more .
  • Office Online
    Web-based version of Microsoft Office that allows you to create and edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents. For more information and access instructions, see "Access Office Online" below.
  • Mobile Applications
    As part of your subscription, you can download the Office mobile app to your iPhone/iPad or Android device. This app combines Word, Excel, PowerPoint and integrates with your OneDrive files. You can also download individual apps, such as Outlook or Teams.

Download Microsoft 365

You can download the desktop version of Microsoft 365 for free on up to five compatible PCs and Macs. To do this:

  1. Log in to TUportal .
  2. Select Microsoft Office 365 on the left under TUapplications.
  3. Sign in using your @temple.edu email address.
  4. When the Microsoft Office Home screen appears, click the Install Office link on the upper-right-portion of the screen.

Please note: Microsoft 365 needs to be connected to the internet at least once every 30 days or it will revert to a read-only mode until user authentication is confirmed.

Manage Your Licenses

You can install Microsoft 365 on any combination of five Windows or Mac computers, five smartphones, and five tablets (work or home).

The following instructions explain how to sign out of retired or unused devices to free up one or more licenses.

Access Mobile Apps

Try the Microsoft Office app for your iPad/Phone or Android device. It combines Word, Excel and PowerPoint into a single app and integrates with your OneDrive files.

After installing the app, click Sign In (iPad/iPhone) or Connect your Account (Android). Then sign in using your AccessNet-username @temple.edu (for example, tua00000@temple.edu ), select Work or school account , and log in using your AccessNet username and password. By linking the app to your AccessNet account, you will have full access to all of the features.

Access Office Online

Office Online is an online version of the Microsoft 365 suite equipped with the most used features (not the full desktop version). You can create new documents and edit your existing documents saved on OneDrive using these online versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote.

To access Office Online:

  1. Go to portal.office.com .
  2. Enter your AccessNet-username @temple.edu (for example, tua00000@temple.edu ).
  3. If prompted to select a Work or school account or Personal account , click Work or school account .
  4. At the Temple login page, enter your AccessNet username and password.
  5. When prompted to Stay signed in? , you can select Yes if you are using your own computer. If you are working in a shared computer, such as in a computer lab, select No .

Reminder : Sign out of Office Online when you are using a public web browser. The Sign Out option is in the upper right corner menu.

Access Additional Online Apps

Microsoft provides a number of additional online apps, such as Planner , Teams and Forms . To access these apps, log in to Office Online as describe above. Then, at the top of the Microsoft 365 page, click All apps .

FAQs

What happens when I graduate or leave Temple University?
As long as your AccessNet account is active you will have limited access to Microsoft 365.  After one year, you will no longer be able to retain a desktop version of the Microsoft Office applications (word, excel, etc.).  Please visit the Access to Temple Tech Resources After You Graduate page for more information.
